Response to the Draft Update of the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism in Australia

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) welcomed the opportunity to respond to the Autism CRC survey about the draft updated National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism in Australia (the Guideline). This followed an earlier APS response, in December 2022, to the Autism CRC consultation that informed the development of the draft guideline. The APS response included feedback that the Guideline should:

  • Encourage practitioners to identify the benefits of early intervention when discussing with families the pros and cons of autism assessment early in life,
  • Update the information about the psychologists to reflect Ahpra training, registration and protected title requirements, and
  • Revise the recommended qualifications, training and experience requirements for psychologists involved in the assessment and diagnosis of autism.
