APS 5+1 Pathway to Registration Program

Supporting provisional psychologists on their journey to general registration.

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) is supporting provisional psychologists undertaking the 5+1 pathway to general registration through a comprehensive program of support.

The Program provides provisional psychologists with the support and connections they need to confidently progress through their internship and take the next step to registration. Financial support is available to both interns and employers of interns in the program.

Interns also receive assistance to secure an internship and supervision, connect with a broad network of experienced psychologists, and will have access to free continuing professional development (CPD).

The Program is designed to help strengthen Australia’s psychology workforce by supporting interns to develop their careers in communities where psychologists are most needed, while promoting greater equity, inclusion and access to psychology services across Australia.

The initiative is fully funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing as part of the Addressing Critical Psychology Shortages – Supporting Provisional Psychologists to Practice extension.

Who is this Program for?

The Program is available to eligible provisional psychologists undertaking their 5+1 internship, as well as organisations who employ provisional psychologists during their internship year.

Priority will be given to provisional psychologists who:

  • Live in and/or undertake their placement in a regional, rural and remote area (Modified Monash Model (MMM) 3 - 7).

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

  • Come from a culturally and linguistically diverse background.

Priority will also be given to organisations who operate in the following settings:

  • Regional, rural and remote services.

  • Community mental health.

  • Child and youth services.

What support is available?

Internship and supervision support

Provisional psychologists are supported to find suitable internships and supervisors to help them successfully complete the 5+1 pathway. Eligible interns/employers will also receive a stipend to contribute towards supervision costs.

Financial support

Financial assistance, in the form of stipends, is available to interns and employers, with additional support available for interns from priority cohorts.

Professional development and career support

Interns will receive two years of complimentary APS membership, access to 170+ hours of free, high-quality CPD (including the National Psychology Exam: Planning and Preparation course), and opportunities to connect with a broad network of experienced psychologists across Australia. Interns will also have access to the APS Professional Advisory Service, which provides guidance and support with professional, ethical or practice-related matters.

National Psychology Exam support

Reimbursement for one sitting of the National Psychology Exam is available to support interns’ progression towards general registration.

Connect and learn with peers

Interns can access exclusive APS resources and a dedicated Community of Practice channel through the PsyCommunity networking platform, providing opportunities to connect, share knowledge and learn from peers.
