A Skills-Based Approach to Strategic Workforce Planning (SWP)

Overview

The aim of this webinar is to:

  • Provide an overview of the requirements for Strategic Workforce Planning
  • Contrast the difference between Workforce Planning and Strategic Workforce Planning
  • Emphasise the important role that Organisational Psychologists can play in Strategic Workforce Planning
  • Introduce some of the key human capital models that a Strategic Workforce Plan should incorporate
  • Demonstrate, using a case study, how the application of the most prominent model in Human Resource Management (HRM) architecture is pivotal to the development of a Strategic Workforce Plan

Across two hours, participants will move through 7 parts, including:

  • Background to the rise of Strategic Workforce Planning (SWP)
  • Why organisational psychologists should be front and centre in the adoption of Strategic Workforce Planning?
  • About Strategic Workforce Planning – the questions that should be addressed?
  • An introduction to Lepak & Snell’s workforce segmentation model, including the Skills Segmentation Questionnaire (SSQ) and Role Mapping Tool
  • 2 other Human Capital models
  • A case study in SWP and Critical Role identification involving a major copper company in SE Asia, facing significant expansion challenges and opportunities because of the demand for copper with the conversion to ‘all things electric’
  • Promulgating the business case for SWP

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:-

  • Explain the difference between Workforce Planning and Strategic Workforce Planning (Refer to Part 3 of the Activity Session Plan and relevant powerpoint slides)
  • Provide an overview of the AWS Workforce Segmentation model based on the workforce of Lepak & Snell (Refer to Part 4 of the Activity Session Plan and relevant powerpoint slides)
  • Interpret some common HR data configured based on the AWS Workforce Segmentation model (Refer to Part 6 of the Activity Session Plan and relevant PowerPoint slides)

About the presenter(s)

Colin Beames is a business-focused organisational psychologist and a former engineer. He is an author and global thought leader in human capital and strategic workforce planning (SWP), with a deep and expansive knowledge of these subjects.

Colin has developed a workforce segmentation tool known as the Skills Segmentation Questionnaire (SSQ), based on a model by Lepak and Snell. The SSQ has application in identifying Critical Roles, as well as ‘Make’ versus ‘Buy’ Roles, that form part of his approach to SWP.

Colin has consulted to international clients as well as Australian-based clients, and he has delivered SWP workshops internationally (UK, South Africa, New Zealand, India, Malaysia, UAE) and throughout Australia. Refer to the Advanced Workforce Strategies website at Advanced Workforce Strategies

This activity is aimed at psychologists and health professionals.
