Transgender experience of mental healthcare in Australia

Organiser Banner

Overview

CPD on the go® eLearning activities provide an opportunity to learn about diverse topics in short, flexible sessions that you can peruse at your own pace, wherever you are.

This activity has been developed by the APS in collaboration with the authors, transgender advocates and the APS’ Diverse bodies, genders and sexuality interest group.

‘Transgender’ refers to the spectrum of individuals who identify with a gender different from the gender they were assigned at birth. Transgender people continue to experience physical, emotional, financial and legal discrimination in Australia, including in the provision of healthcare. This is reflected in less-than-optimal therapeutic outcomes, and so the need for support by informed practitioners is critical. To be informed means to understand the discrimination experienced by many transgender people, which in turn may present unique requirements for validation and advocacy.

In addition, a key element of the Halliday and Caltabiano (2020) article is the emphasis on the therapist’s knowledge of language pertaining to gender identity and sexuality. With that in mind, definitions are provided in addition to the article, to maximise the reader’s comprehension and confidence in their use. This list is by no means exhaustive however, as gender identity is a rapidly evolving area, it is important to acknowledge that definitions of gender and sexuality will continue to evolve with it.

Definitions were informed by Transgender Victoria’s online glossary.

It contains a current evidence-based article, followed by 10 questions to consolidate learning. Together, a pass mark of 80% and completion of a reflection represents active* continuing professional development (CPD).

Level of Learning

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this CPD on the go® eLearning activity (reading the article and passing the quiz), participants should be able to:

  • identify assumptions that negatively impact the therapeutic alliance and discriminate against transgender clients,

  • understand key definitions used to explore transgender issues, gender identity and sexuality,

  • understand the factors that impact on transgender people’s mental health, and

  • identify strategies for creating an inclusive service for transgender clients.

Notes

*’Active CPD’ refers to activities that utilise written or oral processes to reinforce learning and test knowledge. While active CPD is not a requirement of the Psychology Board of Australia, it is recommended because learning is more likely to be retained and to lead to improvements in practice. Provision of a reflection on all types of CPD is, however, a requirement of the Board.
