Overview
Psychologists for Peace warmly invite you to attend this webinar featuring renowned speaker, Dr Judith Locke, presenting on the topic: Are current neoliberal parenting ideals setting humanity up for failure?
In her presentation, Dr Judith Locke, clinical psychologist and registered teacher, will look at the current care environment in parenting, child wellbeing and education, particularly the changes in perceptions of what constitutes an ideal childhood and schooling experience. She will reflect on the causes of these changes and why well-intended practices of care may be making children less capable and confident, and more likely to view the world through a purely self-interested or overly dependent lens. Critically, she will reflect on what this means for their relationships with others and their shared humanity, and how - as psychologists - we may be able to turn this around.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:
- Identify how and why perceptions of what constitutes an ideal childhood and schooling experience have changed over time.
- Identify the impacts of these changes on styles of care provided, and, in turn, on children's self-confidence and capability, and the lens through which they view the world, and
- Identify ways that psychologists in particular can influence these practices so that today's children can become capable of, and confident in, facing life's challenges and being contributing, prosocial members of their communities.
