Foundations of sleep psychology

Overview

More than 50% of adult Australians suffer from at least one chronic sleep symptom, increasing the risk of disease, mental illness and premature death. Insufficient sleep is a global problem with serious implications and sleep problems are frequently overlooked by clients, psychologists, and other health professionals. 

This eLearning activity covers five topics:

1. The underlying physiology of sleep,

2. Theories on sleep,

3. Biopsychosocial mediators of sleep and consequences of poor sleep,

4. Assessment and diagnostic criteria for major sleep disorders, and

5. Sleep psychology measurement tools.

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to this eLearning activity is for 6 months from the date of confirmed registration.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this eLearning activity, participants should be able to:

  • describe the underlying physiology of sleep, its architecture and changes across the life span,

  • outline the role of sleep, and theories regarding the purpose of sleep,

  • describe the biological mechanisms of sleep, as well as social and cultural factors that influence sleep quality,

  • summarise the health consequences of poor sleep,

  • identify the diagnostic criteria for major sleep disorders, and

  • list the measurement tools for sleep psychology.
