Workplace mental health: developing an integrated intervention approach

Organiser Banner

Overview

CPD on the goTM eLearning activities provide an opportunity to learn about diverse topics in short, flexible sessions that you can peruse at your own pace, wherever you are.

Mental health problems in the workplace can have significant, serious, and far-reaching effects that impact the individual, families, workplaces, and the broader community.

For the individual facing mental health difficulties in the workplace, there can be experiences of exclusion, stigmatisation, financial loss, reduced working capacity, opportunity costs, and attitudinal barriers to retaining jobs after treatment.

For the workplace, there is diminished productivity, losses in human potential, turnover, absenteeism, lowered morale, and a high economic burden.

Whilst interventions have been developed and assessed, these have been largely siloed by discipline in terms of their approach (medicine; public health; psychology). LaMontagne and colleagues propose that optimal mental health benefits will be achieved by an integrated approach to workplace interventions, thus allowing the strengths of each discipline to be combined for effective prevention and management of mental health problems in the workplace. The article reviews the prevalence and risk factors for mental health problems in the workplace, and offers a model for an integrated approach to workplace mental health.

This activity contains a current evidence-based article followed by 10 questions to consolidate your learning. Together, a pass mark of 80% and completion of a reflection represents active* continuing professional development (CPD).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this CPD on the goTM eLearning activity (reading the article and passing the quiz), participants should be able to:

  • describe the prevalence and burden of mental health problems in the workplace,

  • identify factors contributing to mental health problems in the workplace,

  • outline effective approaches to addressing and managing mental health problems in the workplace, and

  • summarise the elements comprising an integrated approach to workplace mental health.

Notes

*’Active CPD’ refers to activities that utilise written or oral processes to reinforce learning and test knowledge. While active CPD is not a requirement of the Psychology Board of Australia, it is recommended because learning is more likely to be retained and to lead to improvements in practice. Provision of a reflection on all types of CPD is, however, a requirement of the Board.
