Overview
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a psychotherapy approach used to treat trauma-related mental health conditions, particularly PTSD; however research is also proving as a transdiagnostic treatment approach it can successfully be used for a wide range of presentations. EMDR is one of two recommended therapy approaches by the WHO for treating trauma and is suitable for trauma that is recent or due to historical events.
Whilst EMDR is a structured approach and should only be utilised by appropriately trained therapists, there is also unique variations and adaptations that can be applied depending on the clinical presentation, so it becomes an individualised approach to the client. EMDR requires knowledge about traumatology and rests on solid case conceptualisation. EMDR is grounded in a solid understanding of the Adaptive Information Processing model and how trauma impacts on the brain. EMDR can also be successfully integrated with other therapy approaches.
