Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Introduction and overview

Overview

This six-part webinar series will focus on the traditional Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) treatment model and will introduce:

  • the underlying theory of DBT, 

  • principles and assumptions guiding DBT,

  • four treatment components and stages,

  • main treatment strategies of individual DBT therapy (diary cards; chain analysis), and

  • an overview of the four skill-sets taught in DBT groups. A tangible DBT skill will be taught in each of the skills overview weeks.

1. Overview of DBT 
  • introduction to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT),

  • underlying theory of DBT,

  • treatment stages and modalities, and

  • commitment strategies used in DBT Consultation groups and DBT Skills Group.

2. Individual therapy in DBT 
  • individual therapy component of DBT,

  • individual therapy priorities, and

  • the centrality of diary cards and chain and solution analysis.

3. Overview of mindfulness in DBT
  • importance of mindfulness in DBT,

  • different aspects and types of mindfulness,

  • the Wise Mind model, and

  • mindfulness of the breath exercise.

4. Overview of distress tolerance skills
  • introduction to crisis survival and reality acceptance skills, and

  • applying the TIPP skills.

5. Overview of emotional regulation skills
  • overview of the emotional regulation skills, and

  • the skill of opposite action.

6. Overview of interpersonal effectiveness skills
  • introduction to the assertiveness skills in DBT, including the DEAR MAN GIVE FAST skills, which can be used with patients.

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to the recording and presenter slides is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

Christopher Hepworth MAPS

About the presenter(s)

Chris is a Clinical Psychologist who lives in Perth, Western Australia.
He has been involved with and coordinating DBT programs for nearly a decade. He has a small private practice and is the Clinical Lead on the DBTeen Program in WA, within which he provides clinical consultation and guidance to DBTeen group clinicians, and to Lifeline about clinical aspects of the program.
In addition to his experience with DBT, Chris is also an accredited advanced schema therapist, trainer and supervisor, and his practice is also informed by EMDR and other cognitive-behavioural therapies.
He provides formal training in Australia and abroad, including touring for the Australian Psychology Society in late 2019, from his private practice he provides individual supervision and Supervisor Training for the APS Supervisor Training Program.
