Understanding forced adoption: Training for general practitioners

Organiser Banner

Overview

This training has been produced by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) with funding from the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

Forced adoption practices in Australia through to the late 1970’s were widespread, affecting many people and changing generations of families. The impacts of such practices are varied, ranging from no significant issues, to trauma, grief, mental health difficulties, relationship difficulties, physical health problems, substance abuse and other detrimental difficulties.

This activity offers a broad overview of the forced adoption practices in Australia, supporting health professionals to understand what occurred, the impact of these practices on mothers, fathers, adopted persons and their families, and possible assessment and treatment options to support those in need.

Forced adoption training is divided into two key modules:

  1. Raising awareness: Understanding forced adoption in Australia, and

  2. Presenting factors: Framework for identification and support.
