Responding to the impacts of the climate crisis on children and youth

Organiser Banner

Overview

CPD on the go® eLearning activities provide an opportunity to learn about diverse topics in short, flexible sessions that you can peruse at your own pace, wherever you are.

Climate change exposes many children and young adults to traumatic, extreme weather events, resource shortages, political unrest, and a growing refugee crisis. Indirectly, climate change engenders fear that our planet’s viability to sustain life is threatened: the future that young people might imagine for themselves is in jeopardy. The psychological impact of climate change through these direct and indirect effects is significant.

This activity explores the methods by which psychologists can assist young people to move from powerlessness to agency, and from distress to hope, adaptability and engagement. These measures are critical if we are going to prepare the next generation for the tasks at hand, particularly as success will require major transformations to the way we live, and can only be achieved through sustained, long-term action.

This activity contains a current evidence-based article followed by 10 questions to consolidate your learning. Together, a pass mark of 80% and completion of a reflection represents active* continuing professional development (CPD).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this CPD on the go® eLearning activity, participants should be able to:

  • recognise the causes and impacts of climate change in developed and developing countries,

  • identify the psychological impacts of climate change on children, adolescents, and young adults,

  • ascertain the coping style best suited to improving wellbeing in relation to climate-related distress, and

  • recognise the most effective methods for responding to climate-related distress.

Notes

*’Active CPD’ refers to activities that utilise written or oral processes to reinforce learning and test knowledge. While active CPD is not a requirement of the Psychology Board of Australia, it is recommended because learning is more likely to be retained and to lead to improvements in practice. Provision of a reflection on all types of CPD is, however, a requirement of the Board.
