APS response to the Inquiry into the health impacts of alcohol and other drugs in Australia

The APS was pleased to provide a response to the Parlimentary Commitee Inquiry into the health impacts of alcohol and other drugs in Australia. This submission draws on evidence-informed input from psychologists working in dedicated Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) services, private practice, and academia. The APS highlights the need for trauma-informed and culturally sensitive care, particularly for First Nations peoples, and emphasises the importance of addressing social determinants of AOD use. Key areas identified for improvement include inequitable access, a lack of integrated care for co-occurring mental health and AOD issues, insufficient use of psychological expertise, and a need for increased regulation of private facilities.

The APS also advocates for a preventative, whole-of-government approach to reduce AOD-related harms, incorporating sectors such as education, justice, and housing. Drawing on domestic and international best practices, the APS underscores the value of evidence-based interventions, stigma reduction, and tailored public awareness campaigns to challenge Australia’s entrenched drinking culture.

The APS calls for strategic investments in systematic research and greater inclusion of psychologists in AOD services to improve outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.
