Overview

PsyBA-approved Supervisor refresher training

Master class (Part 4) has been developed for psychologists who want to maintain their status as a Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA)-approved supervisor (principal or secondary). Approved supervisors are eligible to enrol, and attendance to this training will meet the requirements to maintain supervisory status for a further five years. Psychologists who are not currently a PsyBA-approved supervisor can use this workshop for general CPD purposes but cannot use this workshop to gain supervisor approval.

This master class will focus on common issues and challenges that apply to supervision of postgraduate psychology trainees embarking on an Area of Practice Endorsement (AoPE) pathway. This would apply to trainees in their first university-based Psychology Clinic placements and/or in external placements as part of their Masters degree. (NOTE, the +1 “Internship” pathway is seen to have some overlapping, yet also unique challenges. This Masterclass may not be specifically relevant to this supervisee population).

The class aims to identify the range and nature of challenges that can emerge for trainee psychologists, such as early developmental level, issues with maturity, high levels of stress and anxiety, perfectionism, and the pressures of evaluation. Additionally, contextual factors unique to (a) working within or alongside training institutions, and (b) various frameworks such as the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) Competencies framework, Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) Guidelines, and university policies will be discussed.

The training will offer models that can be used to examine the multiple necessary elements of supervision for trainees, including competency-based supervision, reflective practice, provision of teaching/training, and formal evaluation. Further emphasis on supporting professional and personal growth of our supervisees will be discussed from a Compassion-focussed approach.

Participants will engage in numerous activities to discuss and share issues, as well as their own insights and successes. In understanding the unique challenges for this supervisee population, supervisors will aim to enhance their existing supervision competencies, including self-reflectivity and higher-order meta-competencies to integrate, adapt, anticipate, and create a supervisory environment for successful professional growth for the supervisee.
