Therapist attitudes towards the use of AI in therapeutic practice

Organiser Banner

Overview

CPD on the go® eLearning activities provide an opportunity to learn about diverse topics in short, flexible sessions that you can peruse at your own pace, wherever you are.

With the staggering rate of growth in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), understanding its role in therapy and the potential opportunities and obstacles it presents becomes a priority. It is likely that, regardless of personal or professional views about AI, we will see a level of integration into mental health care.

This activity invites your reflection on the implications of AI for clinical practice. A question of particular pertinence for psychologists, revolves around the element of therapeutic alliance, and this article considers the ethical and practical implications of integrating AI into therapeutic practice.

The activity contains a current evidence-based article followed by 10 questions to consolidate your learning. Together, a pass mark of 80% and completion of a reflection represents active* continuing professional development (CPD).

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to this activity is for 6 months from the date of confirmed registration.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this CPD on the go®  eLearning activity, participants should be able to:

  • identify some current uses of AI in mental health and wellbeing services,

  • list the key constructs comprising the therapeutic alliance,

  • summarise key ethical and social considerations on the use of AI and robotics in mental health care,

  • outline recommended guidelines for the use of AI in mental health services, and

  • describe key themes in therapist attitudes towards AI therapeutic settings.

Notes

*’Active CPD’ refers to activities that utilise written or oral processes to reinforce learning and test knowledge. While active CPD is not a requirement of the Psychology Board of Australia, it is recommended because learning is more likely to be retained and to lead to improvements in practice. Provision of a reflection on all types of CPD is, however, a requirement of the Board.
