Overview
The APS Women and Psychology Interest Group is delighted to be hosting this 90-minute webinar with clinical psychologist Aimee Oliveri. Aimee is passionate about advancing psychological interventions for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and advocating for the vital role mental health professionals play in supporting those with the condition.
PMDD is a chronic mood disorder characterised by the cyclical recurrence of severe emotional and physical symptoms that arise in the luteal phase and remit in the follicular phase of the reproductive cycle. Core symptoms include mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depressed mood; however, behavioural and somatic symptoms can also occur.
Affecting approximately 5.5% of menstruating women, PMDD is a debilitating condition, with alarmingly high rates of comorbidity (70%), suicidal ideation (72%) and suicide attempts (34%), highlighting the need for effective interventions. While first-line medical treatments exist, psychological interventions remain underdeveloped and under-researched. Drawing on a recently published paper (Oliveri et al., 2025), Aimee will present the first DBT-informed treatment model for PMDD. This model highlights strategies that address emotion dysregulation, suicidality, interpersonal conflict, and trauma histories, while centralising validation, empowerment, and multidisciplinary collaboration. In addition to outlining the theoretical foundations of the model, Aimee will describe adaptations of the framework for a DBT-informed PMDD group program.
Please note: Time will be allocated for Q and A as part of the webinar.
