COPSA Group Supervision Program for Registrars Session 9: Diversity, Inclusion (Competency#7)

Overview

This is the 9th session of the current structured group Supervision Program to support Organisational Psychology registrars. Up to 33% of supervision hours can be group supervision.

This workshop focusses on Competency 7: Demonstrates a health equity and human rights approach when working with people from diverse groups:

  • Works without discrimination and is inclusive, sensitive and respectful of all forms of individual diversity in clients, colleagues, and relevant others, and with an understanding of intersecting forms of diversity. This includes, but is not limited to age, race, ethnicity, language, culture, immigration status, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical attributes, ability, disability, cognitive capacity, social and/or economic status, geographic location, educational attainment, and religious and/or spiritual orientation.
  • Works with knowledge and understanding of the history of psychological theories and practice, their impact on people from diverse groups, and referral pathways to specialised supports where appropriate.
  • Understands the impact of cultural identity, values, beliefs and experiences on psychological wellbeing or behaviour – including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, migrant and refugee experiences.
  • Recognises the impact of one’s own values, beliefs, experiences, positionality and cultural identity on practice and demonstrates an ongoing commitment to culturally responsive practice.
  • Demonstrates the ability to reflect on and learn from clients/relevant others and their unique experiences.
  • Adapts psychological practice in response to the needs of people from diverse social identity groups and different cultural backgrounds to effectively engage with clients, carers, families, those with lived experience and relevant others.
  • Applies the principles of trauma-aware and culturally informed care.
  • Understands the roles of, and works collaboratively with, service providers and professionals who support socially and culturally diverse individuals and groups.
  • Understands neurodiversity, strengths-based, trauma-informed and positive approaches to supporting people with developmental disability. Demonstrates the ability to adapt psychological practice and make reasonable adjustments for people with disability, including understanding of alternative and augmentative communication.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to demonstrate understanding of Competency 7.

About the presenter(s)

Lucinda Hewitson is an industry leader in Diversity and Inclusion. As an Organisational Psychologist with more than 25 years’ experience, Lucinda works with companies and industry bodies in Australia and abroad. Since establishing her business in 2013, Lucinda has guided global mining companies, federal and state government agencies, utilities, the insurance sector, and international consulting firms to enhance psychological and psychosocial safety in the workplace. Lucinda was formerly the Head of HR: Recruitment, Resourcing and Diversity & Inclusion at BAE Systems Australia. A finalist in the 2013 AHRI Diversity Awards and a Telstra Business Women's Award finalist in 2015 and 2020, Lucinda is also a current member of the Flinders University Council.

Target Audience

This event is aimed at Registered psychologists (registrars) interested in undertaking Organisational Psychology endorsement.

  • This is a Member Groups event. All communication will be sent to the registrants’ registered email address. This includes event reminders with details (such as the Venue details) and any pre-event or post-event resources, if provided by the facilitators. 
  • A post-event email will be sent within two weeks of the event’s completion to each registrant’s registered email address. This email will include the CPD certificate, and any additional resources shared during the session.

It is up to attendees to assess and determine how learning from this event aligns with the requirements of their learning plan. The providers accordingly do not make any representation that the event counts towards attendees’ CPD learning requirements. If an attendee determines themselves that the learning they complete aligns to their learning plan, then they can decide to count those hours towards their CPD requirements for the registration cycle.
