Children's mental health: 4. Treatment of mental health disorders

Organiser Banner

Overview

This activity is part of a comprehensive eLearning training series on children's mental health developed by the Australian Psychological Society.

There is great demand for expertise in the treatment of child and adolescent disorders. This 6 hour eLearning, part of the APS’ series on child mental health, provides a comprehensive and interactive exploration of treatment options for the most common disorders. In addition, practical strategies for engagement and inclusion are provided, as well as a focus on special issues relating to trauma, gender and sexuality.

This course offers an opportunity to update and refine your current approach, and potentially expand your modalities for greater flexibility.

Please note that while this module offers many practical strategies that will be of interest to early career and intermediate learners, it is incumbent upon practitioners to achieve appropriate, additional training and supervision in specific treatments, where relevant.

Across four activities, participants will cover essential knowledge in development, assessment and treatment as well as contemporary issues, for the provision of best practice support and intervention:

  1. Foundations

  2. Child development

  3. Assessment

  4. Treatment of mental health disorders

This is the fourth and final activity in the series and it covers:

  • key elements of best practice,

  • evidence based treatments for common disorders and

  • special issues.

Important:

While this activity represents a significant learning opportunity, it is recommended that early career or new-to-subject practitioners complete this course in conjunction with supervised practice.

Upon completion of the activity, it is also recommended that participants address any remaining learning needs they may have through further professional development. This approach would contribute towards ensuring that vulnerable group of young children and their families have access to evidence-based support for optimal outcomes.

Level of learning

Intermediate. This activity is targeted to those who have some previous learning on the topic.

Duration of access

Access to this activity is for 6 months from the date of confirmed registration.
