Best practice assessment and intervention for ADHD in adults

Organiser Banner

Overview

With the release of the Australian Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in recent years alongside continuously increasing public awareness, the demand for assessment and support for ADHD is high.

This 2-part workshop aims to equip psychologists with the foundations for recognising and understanding ADHD, and for providing evidence-based and neurodiversity-affirming intervention to adults with ADHD.

It will cover:

  • diagnostic assessments,

  • case conceptualisation to inform intervention planning, and

  • effective psychological intervention.

The workshop is focussed on understanding ADHD and its impacts, and on diagnostic assessment of ADHD.  Content includes:

Webinar 1

  • the neurobiology and cognitive profile of ADHD,

  • signs and symptoms of ADHD across the lifespan – looking beyond DSM-5 criteria,

  • common differential and co-occurring conditions,

  • a step-by-step process for a comprehensive and evidence-based diagnostic assessment,

  • troubleshooting common assessment challenges, such as data accessibility, validity concerns, complex presentations, and the impact of ADHD symptoms on the assessment process,

  • providing and reporting assessment outcomes, and

  • ethical considerations during the assessment phase, such as the implications of stigma and current socio-political contexts, and the tensions between medical and neurodiversity-affirming approaches.

Webinar 2

  • case conceptualisation and intervention planning,

  • evidence-based intervention for primary and secondary impacts of ADHD,

  • practical application of the evidence-base, including the provision of several therapeutic models and frameworks to assist with psychoeducation and working towards therapeutic outcomes, and

  • monitoring for and addressing barriers to progress - stigma, grief/acceptance, motivation for change, expectations, influences of important others, and impacts.

Prerequisite

Participants will be required to undertake approximately three hours of preparation work before the first day of the workshop.

This involves viewing a 1-hour pre-recorded webinar (included in the enrolment fee), along with some reading and completion of a case study exercise. Completing this work is essential for participation in the workshop and being able to benefit from the content. The three hours that this pre-reading is expected to take has been included in the CPD hours allocated to this workshop.

Level of Learning

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of these webinars, participants should be able to:

  • use a model of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to understand the cognitive experience of ADHD,

  • use neuro-divergent affirming language to discuss those experiences with individuals with ADHD,

  • recognise common secondary outcomes from ADHD as they present across the lifespan,

  • describe a process for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment for ADHD in adults,

  • conduct a case conceptualisation for intervention planning with an adult diagnosed with ADHD,

  • recognise how psychologists can implement the components of evidence-based non-pharmacological treatment for ADHD (as outlined in the Australian Evidence-based Clinical Guidelines for ADHD, 2022), and

  • address challenges that may arise in the provision of ADHD intervention to adults.
