Overview

The APS, with input from experts in the field, has developed a new eLearning activity on Advanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

CBT has evolved and now includes theoretically integrative and flexible case formulation approaches, incorporating attachment styles, schema and values. Integrative and highly individualised case formulations informs, and is informed by a foundation of sound counselling skills and CBT specific therapeutic relationship elements, such as collaborative empiricism and Socratic dialogue. It has evolved from a disorder-specific and manualised approach to a flexible modality and it retains efficiency and adaptibility through this evolution that enables the clinician to work with clients to develop tailored treatment plans.

The aim of this eLearning activity is to inspire and generate enthusiasm for the possibilities within an evolved concept of CBT and to further enrich the focused psychological strategies made available by psychologists for the benefit of the Australian community.

The activity consists of seven topics:

  1. Introduction to Advanced CBT: acknowledging key frustrations and development,

  2. Personalised medicine and the advent of process- based care/ CBT,

  3. Advanced CBT formulation that is theoretically integrative,

  4. The latest evidence on the therapeutic relationship as a change agent,

  5. A new framework for CBT: the nested nature of relational processes and treatment processes,

  6. Advanced CBT practice: putting it altogether, and

  7. Implications for evaluating your practice of CBTs.
