APS Professional development
Overview
This eLearning activity explores Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
This integrative, psychotherapeutic approach has been shown to effectively ameliorate symptoms associated with trauma, and an exploration of the empirical evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of EMDR across various therapeutic presentations, populations across the life span, and contexts.
The activity covers:
-
underlying EMDR mechanisms and theories and empirical evidence,
-
protocols and processes,
-
ethical challenges will be explored, including research limitations,
-
potential barriers to access, and
-
therapist competencies.
NOTE: This activity does not function as or replace formal, accredited EMDR therapy training. Rather, it provides education regarding the nature of the therapy and how and when it might be effectively used. EMDR therapy and protocols require specialised training in order to use the approach safely and effectively across the developmental life span with clients, and clinicians are reminded of their ethical duty to remain within their scope of practice.
Level of learning
This activity ranges between Foundational (those who are new to the topic) and Intermediate (those who have some previous learning on the topic).
Duration of access
Access to this activity is for 6 months from the date of confirmed registration.
CPD Frequently Asked Questions

APS CPD-Approved
This eLearning activity has been assessed against the APS Standards for CPD activities and approved for its education quality. Learn more about the APS CPD Approval process.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this eLearning activity, participants should be able to:
-
explain the key mechanisms that may contribute to the positive treatment outcomes of EMDR,
-
identify which client populations and presentations may benefit from EMDR, and
-
