Know your therapies: Psychedelic-assisted therapies

Organiser Banner

Overview

Combining altered states of consciousness with talk therapy, Psychedelic-assisted therapies (PAT) represent a paradigm shift in the treatment of mental health disorders.

Emerging evidence indicates a potential for PAT to offer a much-needed alternative for many Australians who suffer from treatment-resistant conditions.

Phase 3 clinical evidence is necessary before widespread use can be endorsed, and while several Australian trials are underway, based on current progress, PAT is likely to receive approval for limited applications in 2023.

In this activity, you will explore current evidence, underlying mechanisms, protocols for administration and ethical challenges. Given the complex ethical, legal, medical, and psychological issues of PAT, access to evidence-based training for psychologists will be paramount.

For those who wish to stay informed on the topic, a link to the relevant APS interest group is provided within the activity in addition to other recommended readings and resources.

This activity comprises of an overview and four topics:

  1. Theory,

  2. Evidence,

  3. Practicalities, and

  4. Ethics.

A minimum of 1.5 hours is required for completion, including a final quiz which requires an 80% pass rate to unlock your certificate of completion.
