eLearning Event

Ten misconceptions about trauma-focussed CBT for PTSD.

Overview

CPD on the go® eLearning activities provide an opportunity to learn about diverse topics in short, flexible sessions that you can peruse at your own pace, wherever you are.

Currently 5.7% of the Australian population has a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (ABS, 2022).

Evidence-based treatments include Trauma-Focused CBT, yet common misconceptions have led practitioners, at all levels of experience, to modify or omit critical elements, potentially reducing the effectiveness of treatment. This is particularly true for experiential elements, such as work on trauma memories, out-of-office behavioural experiments, and trauma site visits.

Murray et al (2022) provides an overview of this gold standard approach, and how each element targets specific aspects of PTSD that are resistant to change.

This activity presents an opportunity to enhance your understanding of trauma-focused CBT and reflect on your own practice, for optimal outcomes.

It contains a current evidence-based article followed by 10 questions to consolidate your learning. Together, a pass mark of 80%, and completion of a reflection represents active* continuing professional development (CPD).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this CPD on the go® eLearning activity, participants should be able to:

  • identify the key components of trauma-focused CBT for PTSD and misconceptions that may impact outcomes,

  • indicate which cognitions, behaviours and other factors may contribute to the maintenance of PTSD, and

  • identify how clinicians can ensure their own practice aligns with gold standard treatment of PTSD.

Notes

*’Active CPD’ refers to activities that utilise written or oral processes to reinforce learning and test knowledge. While active CPD is not a requirement of the Psychology Board of Australia, it is recommended because learning is more likely to be retained and to lead to improvements in practice. Provision of a reflection on all types of CPD is, however, a requirement of the Board.
