Webinar (Live) Event

Sleep and Ageing: What Changes, Why it Matters, and What We Can Do

Overview

Sleep patterns naturally change as people age. Consequently, disturbed sleep can often be considered a part of “normal ageing”. However, disturbed sleep in later life is linked to significantly poorer physical, cognitive and psychological health outcomes.

This webinar will provide an overview of how sleep changes in later life, why these changes occur, and how biopsychosocial factors can lead to disturbed sleep. The bidirectional links between sleep, cognition and mental health will be discussed to highlight the role of sleep as a modifiable risk factor for healthy ageing and quality of life. Key evidence-based interventions and assessment for disturbed sleep in older adults will be reviewed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Distinguish between indicators of normal and disturbed sleep in ageing, developing an understanding of why sleep matters for older adults.
  • Recognise the bidirectional relationship between sleep and mental health and explore the biopsychosocial contributors to disturbed sleep.
  • Outline approaches to the assessment of disturbed sleep in older adults.
  • Outline effective treatment options (such as CBT-I) for older adults.
