APS College
Overview
The NSW Section of the APS College of Clinical Neuropsychologists (CCN) warmly invites members and colleagues to attend an upcoming webinar on dementia and the law.
Social and behavioural changes are common in dementia, and can include reductions in empathy, disinhibition and agitation, alongside cognitive changes that can impair reasoning and decisionmaking. For some people, these behavioural and cognitive changes can lead to incidents which may place people with dementia at risk of interactions with police or the legal system. Perceived criminal behaviour, such as shoplifting, traffic violations, verbal or physical assault have been reported in up to 40% of people with dementia. This event will focus on how to identify perceived criminal behaviour in dementia and outline best practices to minimise risk and enhance clinical care, through a biopsychosocial lens. Other issues at the intersection of dementia and the law, such as capacity and supported decision-making will also be discussed.
