Overview
There has been rapid uptake of the term “Neurodiversity Affirming Practice” in psychology, but what does this term actually mean?
Our team recognised that developing a shared understanding within the psychology profession was an important step toward evidence-informed practice and could provide clearer guidance for clinicians wanting to incorporate these principles in their work with Autistic clients. Using the Delphi method, our research team reached consensus among experts, including Autistic adults with experience as psychology clients, and both Autistic and non-Autistic psychologists with expertise in this area, on what Neurodiversity Affirming Practice looks like in work with Autistic adults.
In this session, I will share the study findings, introduce the seven principles of Neurodiversity Affirming Practice, and discuss opportunities for applying these principles in clinical work.
