Assessing PTSD and treating the underlying disorder with Exposure Therapy

Overview

We are pleased to announce the Gold Coast Branch committee have organised an upcoming in-person presentation with Professor Grant Devilly on Assessing PTSD and treating the underlying disorder with Exposure Therapy.

This one-day workshop will focus on the rationale and subsequent use of exposure therapy in treating post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Grant will outline some key diagnostic criteria that should be borne in mind in trauma cases and particularly those likely to become forensic cases. He will also touch on the discussion regarding the aetiology of PTSD and will also discuss the efficacy of various treatments and how they obtained their 'category rating'. This will then be followed by a hands-on explanation of the treatment, using role plays and demonstrations.  The integration of cognitive techniques into the practice of exposure therapy will also be addressed.

Refreshments to be provided:

Lunch, morning, and afternoon tea will be provided and is included in registration costs.  

Targeted audience

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic and aimed at psychologists and health professionals.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this one-day workshop participants should have:

  • A full understanding of Criterion A in the diagnosis of PTSD;
  • An understanding of the aetiological issues in PTSD;
  • Be informed as to how treatment guidelines are created and how recommendations are created;
  • Skills in conducting exposure therapy and integrating cognitive challenging.

Professor Grant Devilly

About the presenter(s)

Grant conducted his Honours degree in Psychology in England and received a Masters of Clinical Psychology and a PhD from the University of Queensland. He has worked predominantly with neuroses at the Institute of Psychiatry (England), as a senior psychologist in psychiatric hospitals, and is a practicing clinician. He has acted as an advisor to the Victorian Department of Justice and advised the Victorian Parliamentary Review into victim services and another enquiry into ‘Recovered Memory Therapy’. He was also an advisor to parliament in changing legislation on violent video games. He has been invited to present both nationally and internationally on the topic of PTSD, and in particular on psychological aspects of intervening with victims of crime, disaster and war. He was on the scientific working party which developed the Australian Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Acute Stress Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Grant has been a Professorial Fellow at the Brain Sciences Institute in Swinburne University and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He is currently a Professor at Griffith University in the School of Applied Psychology and the Griffith Criminology Institute where he has been focusing on the prevention of crime victimisation and interventions to reduce the impact of trauma.
