Overview

Psychologists who wish to provide supervision for registrants undertaking the 4+2 and 5+1 internships, the registrar program and higher degree placements, must complete the required training to be a Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA)-approved supervisor.

The APS is a Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA)-approved training provider for all forms of supervisor training, including parts 1, 2, and 3 Supervisor training programs. Although these three components may be undertaken with different PsyBA-approved training providers, they must be completed sequentially.

Psychologists wishing to undertake this training, must meet the eligibility criteria for PsyBA approval. To view the criteria and guidelines, visit the Psychology Board of Australia.

Part 2: Skills training

This two-day workshop has been approved for delivery online and equates to the second stage of the Psychology Board of Australia-approved Supervisor training. 

The workshop will build on the knowledge presented in the Part 1 training (Knowledge assessment) to develop supervision skills relevant to all supervisee pathways of training.

Specifically, it will include:

  • practical skills training for evaluating supervisee competencies and developing reflective supervision practice,

  • adult-learning approaches will be used, such as in-vivo and video demonstrations, and

  • participant activities, to develop and reinforce skills across the two days of training.

Important information

  • This training will be delivered over two days, with each day scheduled from 9am to 4.30pm.

  • Participants must log in live at the scheduled date and time and keep their cameras on during the day. 

  • The class will not be recorded.

  • Participants will be able to access reading materials and assessments via their online learning dashboard prior to the live online workshop. 

Technical requirements

  • Access the online events via a PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Android devices. 

  • Systems will require audio and video capabilities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this training, participants should be able to:

  • demonstrate skills in reflective practice in supervision,

  • apply skills in establishing, monitoring and evaluating the supervisory relationship,

  • identify and demonstrate skills in goal setting for supervisee competency development,

  • apply skills in supervisee competency evaluation and providing feedback, and  

  • demonstrate skills in managing an ethical dilemma in supervision.

Mark is a clinical psychologist who has specialised in working with children, young people and families for 25 years. Mark has extensive experience as a clinical supervisor in Australia and the UK as well as expertise in curriculum design and delivery of supervisor workshops to psychologists across a range of topics.
