Emotional Freedom Techniques - emerging research

Organiser Banner

Overview

Individual psychotherapy is considered to have developed in three great waves: psychoanalysis; behavioural approaches; humanistic, experiential psychotherapy, and cognitive therapies.

The emergence of brief psychotherapies that include a somatic component, are now being considered psychotherapy’s 4th wave (e.g., Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or Tapping, is one of these 4th wave approaches, and is a brief stress reduction intervention which uses a two-finger tapping process on acupuncture points with a cognitive statement. EFT has been researched in clinical trials and has over 250 publications indicating its effectiveness for a range of concerns. This series will outline the major research to date and where it is being accepted in health care industries.

There are three features that distinguish EFT as a 4th Wave therapy:

  • it is a true mind-body approach in that it includes direct interventions at the level of the body,

  • it changes brain activity very rapidly, and

  • it has special advantages in quickly and permanently shifting outdated emotional learnings.

These three qualities come together to make EFT unusually rapid, and effective. The growing body of published research including Australian trials will be discussed throughout this presentation and the latest science and research will be presented.

EFT is currently being evaluated against the APA Division 12 Taskforce Tolin criteria for listing on the evidence-based list of psychological treatments.
