APS Response to the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia 2027 Update Consultation Survey

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) provided a submission to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) Consultation Survey on the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) 2027 update.

This submission reiterated our concerns and feedback which we provided in a previous submission in relation to the 2027 OSCA update process, as well as in related submissions to the ABS.

In particular:

• We called again the list of ‘specialisations’ under the psychology occupation in OSCA to be corrected to include Community Psychologist and Sports and Exercise Psychologist, thereby reflecting all nine areas of practice endorsement; and
• We highlighted concerns about the scope of the Psychotherapist occupation description and questioned the necessity of including psychology in the ‘Allied Health Counselling, Psychology, Social Work and Creative Therapy Professionals nec [not elsewhere classified]’ occupation.

The APS looks forward to working collaboratively with the ABS in the ongoing revision and development of OSCA to ensure that the full and distinct role of psychologists within Australia are accurately represented in official statistics and classifications.
