APS submission to Department of Veterans' Affairs funded health treatment inquiry

The APS welcomed the opportunity to respond to the Department of Veterans' Affairs funded health treatment inquiry. In this submission, we argued that veterans often experience complex and long-term mental health challenges. We emphasised that treatment needs vary significantly between individuals and that arbitrary session or monetary limits can undermine recovery and increase the risk of relapse or deterioration.

Key recommendations included:

  • Enable veterans to access psychological treatment for as long as clinically indicated, with treatment duration determined by psychologists based on individual needs rather than monetary or session limits
  • Prioritise continuity, regularity, and consistency of care, recognising that ongoing therapeutic relationships are critical for veterans with complex or chronic conditions and
  • Strengthen access to integrated and evidence-based mental health care with appropriately trained and regulated professionals.
