APS response to the Allied Health Clinical Governance Framework Background and Issues Paper

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) submitted recommendations to Queensland Health’s review of the Allied Health Clinical Governance Framework, advocating for a framework that recognises and supports psychologists' expertise in delivering evidence-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care to ensure high-quality, safe, and effective healthcare for Queenslanders.

Key recommendations include:

  • Workforce capability and capacity – Addressing psychologist workforce shortages, improving access to clinical supervision, and enhancing retention strategies, particularly in rural and remote areas.

  • Recognition of professional scope – Ensuring psychologists' expertise is utilised appropriately within Queensland Health structures, preventing dilution of their specialised skills.

  • Strategic leadership – Establishing dedicated, psychology-specific senior leadership roles to strengthen clinical governance and advocate for resources to support high-quality psychological care.
