The APS provided a submission to the NT Inquiry into Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD), calling for a compassionate, safe and evidence-based approach to end-of-life care. While not advocating for or against VAD, the APS emphasises equitable access to high-quality end-of-life options, strong safeguards, and culturally appropriate care.
The submission supports nationally consistent eligibility criteria, flexible approaches to end-of-life prognosis, and clear protections for decision-making capacity, particularly for vulnerable groups. We highlight the critical role of psychologists in providing psychological support, conducting capacity assessments, supporting families and health professionals, and ensuring culturally safe implementation.
The APS also recommends investment in workforce training, care navigator services, and meaningful engagement with Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and culturally diverse communities to ensure safe, accessible and person-centred VAD processes in the NT.
