Understanding Pain: A Practical Introduction for Psychologists Working with Older Adults

Overview

Pain is often assumed to be a normal, inevitable part of aging, with little that can be done to improve it. This assumption can mean many older adults experience considerable pain and distress without appropriate assessment and treatment, significantly impacting quality of life. In reality, much can be done to support people living with pain. Effective, evidence-based approaches are available, and this session aims to equip psychologists working with older adults to better recognise and respond to persistent pain. This webinar is a practical introduction to psychological approaches to pain, including considerations and adaptations for older adults.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

  • Describe key principles of pain science
  • Identify factors contributing to the pain experience
  • Recognise potential treatment targets and example interventions
  • Apply existing clinical skills to support older adults with persistent pain
