Submission about improving the competency and accountability of family report writers

The APS welcomed the opportunity to respond to the Federal Attorney-General's Department consultation about improving the competency and accountability of family report writing professionals. Family report writers are considered social science experts and are usually psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers.

The APS commended the Government's commitment to progress the development of family report writing competency and quality assurance mechanisms that address concerns raised in the previous Australian Law Reform Commission's (ALRC) 2019 report. The APS concurred that many of the quality assurance mechanisms suggested in the consultation paper are necessary to ensure the best interests of children are served; but also noted that these mechanisms must be streamlined and proportionate and not duplicate existing psychology AHPRA registration and professional requirements.

The APS noted that as the peak body for psychologists, we wish to contribute to further review and development of family report writing standards, processes, and tools; and are well-placed to develop and deliver professional development training and credentialing for psychologists and other health professionals who are family report writers.
