Submission to Inquiry into the Register of Environmental Organisations

This document is a submission made in 2015 by the APS to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on the Environment Inquiry into the Register of Environmental Organisations.

The purpose of this Inquiry was to report on the administration and transparency of the Register of Environmental Organisations (the Register) and its effectiveness in supporting communities to take practical action to improve the environment.

The APS submission identifies the psychological and community wellbeing benefits, as well as the benefits to local and global environments, of both advocacy and on-the-ground activities performed by environmental organisations.

The APS believes that acting in pursuit of a public good, such as protecting local ecosystems and restoring a safe climate, is legitimately charitable. Campaigning to stimulate public debate should be supported. Furthermore, tax deductibility status increases willingness to donate to causes, which has psychological benefits for the individual giver .
