Series: Psychology within the legal context

This eLearning series consist of two modules:

  1. Exploring psychology in the legal context, and

  2. Practicing psychology in the legal context

1. Exploring psychology in the legal context

This the first module in the series, and covers two topics:

  • Psychology and the Australian legal system, and the

  • Roles of psychologists in legal contexts.

It will:

  • review the structure of the Australian legal system, including its branches and special courts,

  • examine key principles that underpin the legal system, from principles of sentencing to human rights, and

  • briefly describe the concept of therapeutic jurisprudence. 

This module sets the foundational knowledge for the second module in the series.

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to this eLearning actvity is for 6 months from the date of confirmed registration.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this eLearning activity, participants should be able to: 

  • describe the interaction between psychological settings and the Australian legal system,

  • explain the role of psychologist as expert witness in the legal context and legal processes, and

  • explain the role of a treatment provider in the legal setting.
