Psychologists who wish to provide supervision for provisional psychologists undertaking internships or higher degree placements or a registrar program, must complete a 3-part Psychology Board of Australia-approved supervisor training program to achieve Board-approved supervisor status (BAS).

No. Psychologists are not required to undertake the 3-part Psychology Board of Australia-approved  supervisor training program to supervise colleagues.

The purpose of the PsyBA-approved training program is to supervise provisional psychologists undertaking training pathways or supporting psychologists undertaking endorsement pathways.

Psychologists wishing to undertake supervisor training must meet the eligibility criteria for PsyBA approval.

For more information on the PsyBA supervisor training requirements, refer to the PsyBA website.

You can enrol into all three components of the program HERE. Significant savings apply for this enrolment option.

You cannot progress to Part 2 without completing and passing Part 1. You will need to change your Part 2 enrolment dates to a later time.

Email us prior to the date of the Part 2 component you are scheduled to attend.

Participants must attend both days and successfully pass all assessments for Part 2 in order to complete this component.

If you are unable to attend both days in full you email us and request a reschedule to your attendance.

A study guide is provided upon enrolment that details the criteria and outcome scoring.

Following the completed assessment of Part 3 tasks, participants will receive an email advising of the outcome. Feedback of that assessment will be available within Moodle.

If you did not pass initially, you may be asked to provide a supplementary piece of assessment or resubmit a task in full in order for the assessment team to adequately mark against PsyBA’ s criteria.

In order to maintain your Board-approved supervisor status, you are required to complete refresher training every 5 years (Supervisor Training Masterclass Part 4) following your initial BAS approval.

The APS offers a wide range of Masterclass topics to update knowledge, skills, and maintain Board-approved supervisor status.

Explore Masterclass topics.

The APS has been granted funding to offer 1000 Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) approved supervisor training places for eligible psychologists.

We have allocated 500 competency- based supervisor training (full training) for new supervisors and 500 training places for existing supervisors who need to undertake a refresher masterclass in order to maintain their current PsyBA-approved registered supervisor status (refresher training is required every five years).

There are two types of places available in this Commonwealth funded initiative:

  1. Become a new PsyBA-approved supervisor. Applications closed 4pm AEST, 4 October 2024.
  2. For existing PsyBA-approved supervisors wanting to maintain their status as a supervisor. Applications are open.

Note: Submission of an application does not constitute acceptance into the program.

As part of the qualifying criteria of this grant, priority will be given to PsyBA registered psychologists who work with priority populations, including First Nations, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD), and/or regional, rural, and remote (located in MMM3-7), to become Board-approved Supervisor or to maintain existing Board-approved supervisor status.

Note: Anyone who is currently enrolled in the supervisor training program or in a refresher master class should not apply.

If you are successful in securing a place, you will be notified and advised of the date of the Part 2 training component that you have been placed in.

You will be required to confirm your acceptance of the offer and the specific Part 2 dates that you have been allocated into.

If any changes are required, you will be able to respond at that time and we will do our best to accommodate your request, however, this may not always be possible as workshops have capped numbers.

We are currently working through many applications and in keeping with the order of receipt and qualifying criteria, we will be contacting successful applicants in sequence.

Successful applicants will have up to May 2028 to complete the training.

Becoming a supervisor

The notification process to unsuccessful applicants has been completed.

Existing supervisors (Master classes)

Ongoing. Applicants will be prioritised and accommodated into available classes based on their PsyBA Supervisor status expiry date.

Applications are assessed for eligibility against the criteria set by the Commonwealth for this grant and in the order that they are received. The criteria included psychologists who work with clients who are First Nations or from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds, located in Regional and Remote locations (MMM3-MMM7), and other priority populations.

As we process and confirm applicant eligibility, sometimes those applicants may not be able to commit to the training for various reasons and a place will become available.

That means that the next eligible person on the list will be contacted and invited to participate in the program. If they accept the place, that position will be filled. If they cannot accept the place, the immediate next applicant will be contacted, and so on until the place is filled.

No, and the reasons vary.

Educational activities that are developed in collaboration with APS Professional Development are recorded. However, some webinars may not be recorded due to agreements in place with collaborators and others will only permit access to the recording, materials, and applicable resources for participants who attended the ‘live’ event.

Each activity will have information included in its specific listing on the APS website.

If the webinar is going to be recorded, yes.

Check the activity description for the specifics.

Most live webinars are recorded, and the recording (on-demand) is made available within five (5) business days of the date of the live webinar.

Registered participants receive access to the recording, presenter slides and any applicable resources for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

If a webinar has already taken place, been recorded, and made available as an on-demand activity, then that webinar recording will be available for you to enrol in.

Explore all APS on-demand activities.

One day prior to the scheduled date of the live webinar, all registered participants will receive an email with instructions on how to join the webinar live.

If you have not received an email by that date, email us at [email protected] or call on 03 8662 3300.

The conclusion of a live webinar includes a 15-minute Q&A session.

Although you won’t be able to speak directly during the live presentation, you will be able to ask questions using the chat function.

There will be a dedicated facilitator online to monitor questions for the presenter.

Some activities have limits on participant numbers.

If registrations are closed, the event may have reached its capacity.

Continue the registration process and indicate your interest to be placed on a waitlist (if applicable to that activity).

Most live webinars are recorded and made available after the live event has taken place.

If a webinar will be recorded, it will be stipulated in the event description under the 'Duration of access' heading'.

If you aren't sure, email us at [email protected] and a member of the Professional development team can assist.
