Overview

TRAINING PACKAGE

This package consolidates two existing eLearning activities in the series 'Psychology within the legal context'. Register for this package and take advantage of reduced fees and an extended access period.

Module 1: Exploring psychology within the legal context

This module aims to provide a foundation for understanding roles and responsibilities of psychologists within the legal setting, and to offer key principles of practice and consideration when engaging in such roles. It covers:

  1. psychology and the Australian legal system, and the

  2. roles of psychologists in legal contexts.

Module 2: Practicing psychology in the legal context

This module explores clinical practice issues for the psychologist to consider in the legal context including typical client characteristics, responding to legal requests, preparing reports for court and responding to legal questions. It covers:

  • ethics and procedures,

  • professional boundaries and relationships, and

  • risk management. 

The APS acknowledges the significant contributions in time and expertise of the National Forensic College including: Dr Amanda White - UNSW, Dr Katie Seidler - USYD, Dr Katrina Fritzon - Bond University, and Dr Astrid Birgden - Deakin University.

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to this eLearning activity is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration. (Individual activity access period is 6 months)

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this eLearning package, participants should be able to: 

  • describe the interaction between psychological settings and the Australian legal system,

  • explain the role of psychologist as expert witness in the legal context and legal processes, 

  • explain the role of a treatment provider in the legal setting,

  • describe the ethical and procedural issues relevant to psychologists’ roles in the Australian legal system, 

  • describe the parameters of professional boundaries, relationships, and psychology practice in the Australian legal system, and

  • describe strategies for personal and professional risk management for psychologists intersecting with the Australian legal system.
