Psychology regulation

Psychologists in Australia have a range of regulatory requirements with which they must comply.

These requirements are set out in standards and guidelines provided by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) based on the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law.  Psychologists also have to adhere to a range of relevant legislation in each jurisdiction, including mental health, child protection, and health records legislation.

The APS continues to advocate for the design and implementation of appropriate regulatory requirements that protect consumers, while not placing an unreasonable burden on psychologists.

Advocacy efforts include:

  • responding to government and regulatory agency consultation papers
  • raising member issues directly with the PsyBA and seeking clarification of standards and guidelines
  • providing advice to governments on legislation and administrative arrangements that affect psychologists.
