Becoming a member

Find out more about becoming a member of the APS including eligiblity, along with answers to commonly asked questions below. 

If you are not a current APS member, nor have been a member of the APS before, you can apply to join online.

For applicants with an APS assessment of their qualifications, select the relevant outcome.

The APS offers several pathways to membership.

Pathways to APS membership are generally determined by the qualfications you have completed. Please find below further information on the different types of membership you may be eligible for.

The APS recognises only completed qualifications. For qualifications to be considered as part of a membership application, you will need to provide a certified copy of the academic transcript which clearly states that the qualification has been completed or conferred.

Please note that the APS does not accept letters as official evidence of course completion.

Possibly. You need to provide an official academic transcript which shows proof of completion of your degree or that you have met all the requirements of the degree. The APS assesses only completed qualifications.

You may wish to apply for the grade of Associate Member and then upgrade to the grade of Member once you obtain an official academic transcript from the university which states proof of completion.

No. Membership of the APS and registration as a psychologist in Australia are two distinct processes. You do not need to be registered as a psychologist in Australia to hold membership with the APS.

The Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) determines the requirements for registration.

At this stage you are eligible to apply for the grade of Associate Member of the APS. Once you can obtain an official academic transcript which shows proof of completion of your accredited Masters degree, you may upgrade to the grade of Member.

Yes. The non-standard route to the grade of Member is for those who obtained general registration via the internship pathway. To check if this pathway is for you, please go to: Membership grades and fees.

To access discounted professional indemnity insurance with Aon you will need to contact Aon directly. Be sure to inform Aon that you are an APS member by providing your member number.

Obtain an insurance proposal form or contact details for Aon

The APS cannot arrange your Aon professional indemnity insurance on your behalf. Once you hold the grade Associate Member or Member you may then contact Aon and organise your professional indemnity cover.
