Area of Practice Endorsement pathway

In 2010 the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) created the pathways to area of practice endorsement. The PsyBA clearly indicated that an endorsement is not a separate specialist register, nor is it based on experience derived during the course of a professional career.

The following areas of practice endorsement are available for psychologists:

  • clinical neuropsychology
  • clinical psychology
  • community psychology
  • counselling psychology
  • educational and developmental psychology
  • forensic psychology
  • health psychology
  • organisational psychology
  • sport and exercise psychology

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply for an area of practice endorsement a psychologist must have completed advanced training in the form of an APAC-accredited Masters or Doctorate qualification in the particular area of practice followed by a requisite period of supervised practice.

  • Master’s graduates must complete a minimum of two years of approved, supervised, full-time equivalent practice with a PsyBA approved supervisor.
  • Doctorate graduates must complete a minimum of one year of approved, supervised, full-time equivalent practice with a PsyBA approved supervisor.
  • Those finishing an accredited Master/PhD must complete a minimum of one and a half years of approved, supervised, full-time equivalent practice with a PsyBA approved supervisor.

The requirements for area of practice endorsement are set out in the Area of practice endorsements registration standard.

Starting the registrar program

To be eligible to apply to start a registrar program you must already hold general registration. You can use the following form:

The transition provisions apply to psychologists who were already enrolled in an accredited Masters or combined Masters/PhD immediately prior to the commencement of the National Scheme, i.e. on 30 June 2010. Refer to the above non-standard pathway application form for details.

Graduates of Doctorate programs who were enrolled on 30 June 2010 may apply directly for area of practice endorsement.
