Postgraduate study

Postgraduate study in psychology builds on foundational psychological knowledge and skills obtained during an accredited four years of undergraduate study.

At this level, study becomes more explicitly focussed on the skills and requirements needed by professional practitioners.

APAC accredited professional postgraduate courses focus on developing competencies in areas such as:

  • Ethical practice
  • Legal and professional matters
  • Psychological assessment and measurement
  • Intervention strategies
  • Research and evaluation
  • Communication and interpersonal relationships.

An accredited postgraduate degree can be completed in the form of a Masters (two-years FTE), Doctorate (three-years FTE) or a combined Masters/PhD (four-years FTE), which each involve coursework, supervised placements and research.

In Australia, postgraduate psychology degrees are offered in nine areas of psychological practice (PsyBA-approved areas of practice endorsement):

  • Clinical neuropsychology
  • Clinical psychology
  • Community psychology
  • Counselling psychology
  • Educational and developmental psychology
  • Forensic psychology
  • Health psychology
  • Organisational psychology
  • Sport and exercise psychology.

More information on postgraduate psychology study options are available on the study pathways page.
