Evenings With AI: AI and Children (Part 2) - Promise, Peril, and Practical Guidance for Psychologists

Overview

We are delighted to welcome Dr Guidetti for more practical and specialised areas of application of AI tools. The APS Perth Branch is excited to invite you to this 2-part encore series of Evenings With: AI.

Schedule:

PART 2: AI and Children: Promise, Peril, and Practical Guidance for Psychologists 12th of November 2025 (online) 6:30pm – 8:00pm AWST

This workshop explores the rapidly evolving interface between artificial intelligence and the lives of children and adolescents. Drawing on contemporary clinical, developmental, and cyberpsychology research, it examines the unique ways in which young people engage with AI tools—whether for learning, emotional support, entertainment, or self-expression—and the potential developmental impacts of these interactions. Attendees will learn to critically assess both the opportunities and risks AI poses for children, including issues of emotional enmeshment, privacy, misinformation, and the shaping of identity. The session will provide clinicians with frameworks to stratify AI use risk in younger populations, strategies for fostering healthy digital habits, and approaches for guiding parents, schools, and communities in the safe integration of AI into children’s lives. Practical examples will illustrate how to translate ethical principles and emerging “AI guardrails” into day-to-day practice with child and adolescent clients.

Please note: Though this is an encore 2 part series following the highly successful 4-part series offered earlier this year, you can attend this as a stand alone workshop.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the distinctive developmental and psychological factors that shape how children and adolescents interact with AI, including cognitive, social, and emotional considerations.
  • Evaluate common use cases of AI in young people’s lives, recognising both beneficial applications (e.g., safe skill-building, educational support) and high-risk scenarios (e.g., harmful advice, over-reliance, privacy breaches).
  • Apply strategies for fostering critical thinking and digital literacy in children, enabling them to assess and interpret AI responses more effectively.
  • Formulate strategies to educate and collaborate with parents, carers, and educators on setting healthy AI boundaries and mitigating risk.
  • Integrate ethical standards, cultural sensitivity, and emerging regulatory guidance into professional decision-making when working with young clients engaging with AI.
