Polyvagal Theory and its application to therapy

Overview

The APS hosts this webinar with the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.

This webinar will cover the Polyvagal system, specifically:

  • its influence on clients' behaviours and emotions,

  • ways that mental health professionals can better guide their clients to modify their autonomic nervous system to facilitate their moving out of habitual patterns of fight, flight, and collapse,

  • ways to better connect with self and others,

  • the three major principles of Polyvagal Theory and how clients present in the three different polyvagal states, and

  • the application of Polyvagal theory in therapy with specific techniques provided.

Level of learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to the recording and presenter slides is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • understand Polyvagal theory and the role of vagal nerve, and

  • apply Polyvagal Theory into specific techniques to assist clients feel safer, self-regulate, and reconnect to themselves, the therapist, and then others.

About the presenter(s)

Ari Badaines,PhD is a clinical psychologist who trained in the USA. He has presented various workshops in over thirty countries including those for the Psychological Society of Ireland and the BPS. Ari completed his training with Porges and Dana, and has presented Polyvagal Theory in Australia for a range of mental health professionals. He is known to be an engaging and entertaining presenter.
