Schema therapy: Understanding and treating trauma

Overview

Schema Therapy is an evidenced-based treatment for Personality Disorders and ‘hard-to-treat’ presentations and problems. Derived from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), It incorporates and emphasises a number of affect change technique, such as imagery rescripting, Chair Work, and Limited Reparenting, in addition to CBT techniques to create change. This webinar series covers the:

  • underlying theory of Schema Therapy and a thorough understanding of the 18 schemas and key modes,

  • key treatment techniques and unique treatment aspects of Schema Therapy, and 

  • application and nuances of Schema Therapy for trauma treatment (final 2 webinars).

Delivered via a combination of live demonstration, videos, and the presentation of a clinical case of a client with Borderline Personality Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), this case study will demonstrate the clinical application of Schema Therapy from the initial assessment and conceptualisation, through to core treatment strategies in a case involving trauma, and will provide a practical experience for the learner.

Webinar 1: Schemas and theoretical foundations

Reasons for the creation of Schema Therapy, theoretical foundations, and the traditional 18 schemas.

Webinar 2: Modes, assessment and conceptualisation

Overview of the main modes in Schema Therapy, unique aspects of assessment, and tips for how to conceptualise.

Webinar 3: Limited reparenting and cognitive techniques

Core components of Limited Reparenting (the therapeutic relationship), including empathic confrontation, and the unique cognitive techniques in Schema Therapy.

Webinar 4: Experiential techniques

Overview of the affective change techniques in Schema Therapy focusing on imagery rescripting and Chair Work.

Webinar 5: Trauma: Barriers, preparation and the therapeutic relationship

This is the first of two webinars (webinars 5 & 6) that focus on the ways Schema Therapy can be applied to trauma. This webinar will primarily focus on the non-direct trauma treatment aspects of the therapy, including overcoming barriers to trauma work (e.g. the avoidant protector), preparation (including widening the window of tolerance), and the healing value of the therapeutic relationship.

Webinar 6: Trauma: Experiential techniques and direct trauma treatment

This is the second of two webinars (webinars 5 & 6) that that focus on the ways Schema Therapy can be applied to trauma. This webinar will primarily focus on the direct application to trauma treatment including imagery rescripting, chair work and therapeutic letter-writing.

This activity ranges between Foundational (those who are new to the topic) and Intermediate (those who have some previous learning on the topic)

Duration of access

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this webinar series, participants should be able to:

  • recognise of the evidence base of Schema Therapy,

  • identify the 18 traditional maladaptive schemas, and main modes and reasons Schema Therapy was created,

  • apply assessment techniques in Schema Therapy and understand a schema therapy presentation,

  • recognise 4 treatment components of Schema Therapy and their application, and 

  • understand a Schema Therapy approach when helping someone with trauma including the key components of the therapeutic relationship and affective techniques.

About the presenter(s)

Chris is a Clinical Psychologist and accredited advanced schema therapist, trainer and supervisor who lives in Perth, Western Australia. He has a small private practice and is also the Clinical Lead on the DBTeen Program in WA, within which he provides clinical consultation and guidance to DBTeen group clinicians and to Lifeline about clinical aspects of the program. In addition to being trained in Schema Therapy, Chris has been coordinating and delivering Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) programs for a number of years, and his practice is also informed by EMDR and other cognitive-behavioural therapies. Chris provides formal training in Schema Therapy both in Australia and abroad, including touring for the Australian Psychology Society in late 2019, in addition to providing training and up-skilling in DBT. From his private practice he also provides individual and group supervision.
