Media Award for Public Engagement with Psychological Science

The Media Award for Public Engagement with Psychological Science recognises an outstanding individual who has given a public voice to psychological science through the communication of high quality research or the promotion of psychological science more generally to the public.

Eligibility criteria

  1. Candidates need not be members of the Society.
  2. Candidates' contributions/work must have had significant impact in Australia.
  3. Candidates must have been engaged in the communication of psychological science for at least thirty-six (36) active months prior to the close of nominations. Such communication may be in the form of:
    1. Public lectures, workshops, or exhibitions
    2. The publication of commentaries or articles in the printed, electronic, or social media
    3. Commentary via radio, television or film
    4. Communication via the internet (e.g., blogs, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn).

Judging criteria

In judging Candidates for the Award, the Selection Committee will have regard to:

  1. The quality and evidence-based nature of the Candidate’s contribution to the promotion of psychological science
  2. Evidence of the impact of the Candidate’s contribution to the promotion of psychology in the public sphere.

Value of the Award

Successful Candidates for the Media Award for Public Engagement with Psychological Science will:

  1. Be offered a one (1) year membership of the Society at no cost, provided that the successful Candidate makes an application for membership within three (3) months of receiving notice of their Award. If the successful Candidate is an existing member of the Society, he or she will be offered membership of the Society for the following twelve (12) months at no cost.
  2. Be offered the opportunity to submit a one-page article to InPsych on the award-relevant subject, the content of which could be of value to the Psychological Science Community.
  3. Receive a plaque for the Media Award for Public Engagement with Psychological Science.

Administration

4.1 Nomination Process

  1. A call for nominations for the Media Award for Public Engagement with Psychological Science will be:
    1. Advertised in relevant APS publications and media
    2. Provided to the Heads of School or Department of each tertiary institution or higher education provider in Australia.
  2. Nominations should be submitted using the Society’s online nomination form and must include:
    1. Details of the Candidate’s outreach and impact, and their method of promotion to the general public
    2. Evidence of such an impact (such as newspaper clippings, links to online videos, news articles, blogs, etc.)
    3. A curriculum vitae.
  3. Nominations should be submitted electronically by the closing date.

4.2 Selection Process

  1. A Selection Committee will be responsible for:
    1. Determining an appropriate Candidate for receipt of the Award
    2. Recommending an appropriate Candidate to the Board for endorsement.

4.3 Award Presented

  1. All Candidates (both successful and unsuccessful) will be formally notified in writing before any public announcement is made
  2. An acknowledgement of the successful Candidate will be published on the APS website and other relevant psychology and education publications following the receipt of their Award
  3. The successful Candidate will be presented with an Award plaque at the APS Congress in the year following receipt of the Award or, in years when no Congress will be held, at another high profile event.
