This APS Position Statement Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of gender diverse and transgender people is a high-level principles-based document developed by the APS Panel on assessment, support and therapeutic approaches for transgender and gender diverse people. Panel membership included lived experience, psychologists with research and practice experience, an independent chair, a GP, and a psychiatrist. The APS acknowledges the diversity of member perspective on this issue and emphasises the importance of respectful, evidence-based, and person-centred practice.
The purpose of this position statement is to outline the APS’ position regarding psychologists who seek to respond to the mental health and wellbeing needs of gender diverse and transgender people. It is not intended to be a practice guide or systematic review.
In summary, the Position Statement asserts:
- The APS supports all individuals’ rights to express a/multiple gender(s).
- Health care, including psychological care, should be ethical, evidence-based, discrimination free, respectful, and person-centred.
- Gender diversity is not pathological and does not require psychological intervention. However, individuals may seek support regarding gender or for gender-related distress.
- Every person experiences gender and transition differently. Medical gender affirmation is not the only way to support transition.
- Psychologists can play an important role in addressing the mental health and wellbeing needs of gender diverse and transgender people.
- At all times, psychologists must work within their professional competence which may necessitate undergoing training, supervision, case consultation, and referral. They must be aware of current scientific knowledge and guidelines.
- Scientific literature and professional guidelines vary considerably in recommendations regarding the best way to provide care for gender diverse and transgender people.
- More systematic and longitudinal research is needed to address gaps in understanding of the long-term impacts of many aspects of transition as well as the best way to support the mental health of gender diverse and transgender people.
