CBT for late life anxiety and depression

Overview

The APS hosts this activity with the APS Psychology & Ageing Interest Group (PAIG). 

This on-demand activity introduces the assessment and treatment of older adults with anxiety and depression in community settings using cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT).

It will:

  • review current literature on evidence-based practice for the assessment and treatment of older adults with anxiety and depression,

  • explore how to identify symptoms of anxiety and depression in older adults, and how these differ from younger populations, and

  • demonstrate how to deliver the key components of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to older adults with depression and anxiety, including learning about the modifications to standard CBT required to maximise treatment effectiveness in the elderly.

Level of Learning

Intemediate. This activity is targeted to those who have some previous learning on the topic.

Duration of access

Access to this activity is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • identify anxiety and depression in older adults living in the community,

  • outline the key cognitive behavioural therapy strategies for treating anxiety and depression in older adults living in the community, and

  • understand the key differences in how anxiety and depression presents and is treated in older populations compared to younger adults.

About the presenter(s)

Professor Viviana Wuthrich is a clinical psychologist and Director of the Centre for Ageing, Cognition and Wellbeing at Macquarie University. Her research is focused on understanding and treating anxiety and depression across the lifespan. She has a particular interest in developing and evaluating psychological interventions for older adults. She developed the Ageing Wisely program for treating comorbid anxiety and depression and has demonstrated its efficacy in several large clinical trials. She has 70 publications, received over $8.5 million in research funds, and has received the Clinical College Alastair Heron award, APS ECR award and NSW Young Tall Poppy award.
