The purpose of this Bill is to recognise the unique and special place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first peoples of our nation. As an interim step towards recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution, the APS supports the intent of the Bill to assist in raising awareness and building a national consensus for constitutional change.
The APS believes that Constitutional Recognition is a national imperative if we are to close the gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous health and wellbeing.
