The APS continues to demonstrate its commitment to guiding and assisting psychology students across Australia with the launch of Psych Student HQ, a dedicated section for students on the APS website.
Launched late last year, Psych Student HQ has been established to support psychology students on their journey towards a career in psychology. It provides information on choosing degrees, the different work contexts that a degree in psychology can lead to, the pathways to registration as a psychologist, and answers to frequently asked questions. Information is divided into four main sections covering careers in psychology, information on studying psychology, APS support for students and resources developed specifically for students.
Careers in psychology
An informative aspect of this section is the popular ‘Psychologists Stories’. Here visitors can read about those who have chosen psychology as their profession and how they are using their skills across a wide range of workplace contexts. Throughout 2012 more stories will be added that further illustrate the diversity of pathways and work contexts within psychology.
Studying psychology
This section offers students useful information on study pathways at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as guidance to help them navigate the many important regulations that now govern psychology since the introduction of the national registration and accreditation scheme.
APS support for students
For students looking to build their CV, expand their professional networks or find employment, this section of the student web portal outlines the way in which APS membership can support this. One such example is the new Facebook page, www.facebook.com/APSstudents, the first foray for the APS into social media. In time, it is expected that the Facebook page will become a place for APS students from around the country to connect with each other and the APS in an environment that fosters a shared learning experience.
Student resources
The APS resources available for students will continue to expand over 2012. The first of these resources, ‘AskAPS’, will become a comprehensive knowledge base where students can ask study and career-related questions and have them answered by experts at the APS. Other resources such as tools to help students prepare for their postgraduate applications will be added over the course of the year.
